Avec ce titre Marvin Gaye a marqué un tournant dans l'histoire de la musique Soul et du Rhythm and blues, à la fois par sa musique et par les paroles , qui traitent de divers sujets de société comme : la guerre( Viêt Nam),la pauvreté ou la drogue.

Composé après sa dépression suite à la mort de Tammi Terrell "What's Going On" est un énorme carton , elle restera classé n°1 pendant 5 semaines de suite.
L'album "What's Going On" restera classé pendant plus d'un ans et demi (billboard top album).
